New Castle County is about to make it a lot harder for pot shops to open up.

With legal weed just around the corner, many places are rushing to put the brakes on the new industry.

After Wilmington got heat for its proposed rules and outright ban, New Castle County is now stepping up. Dover and Seaford are also talking about restrictions, and Sussex County has already clamped down on where pot shops can go.

Council members Janet Kilpatrick and David Tackett are pushing an ordinance that’s up for discussion on Tuesday, December 3rd. If it passes, it could seriously limit where you can buy legal weed in the county.

– Wilmington’s War on Weed: Despite the legalization of marijuana, some local officials in Wilmington are determined to stifle the industry. Recent proposals, including a potential ban and overly restrictive zoning laws, are designed to make it nearly impossible for businesses to operate.

– A Missed Opportunity: Wilmington’s failure to embrace the legal marijuana industry could have serious economic consequences. By missing out on tax revenue and job creation, the city risks falling behind other communities that have successfully capitalized on this emerging market.

– Sussex County, the state’s second-biggest county, has already made it tough for pot shops to open. As WHYY News reported, the county passed a law in May that bans dispensaries from being within 3 miles of towns, other pot shops, churches, schools, and treatment centers.
